Monterey, California
This project was a study for a new hotel on the site of the Monterey Fishing & Canning Company (see 1945 map) located on historic Cannery Row of John Steinbeck fame. This 5-story luxury facility was designed to be contemporary yet contextual to pay homage to the special architectural character of this area. It would provide 157 guest rooms divided among 3 floors surrounding a central sky-lit atrium lobby. Amenities would include retail shops and a restaurant. Public access from Cannery Row (the street) to the water would be provided along a formalized exterior promenade connecting to historic structural relics of the original cannery including a platform out over the water. Below the hotel would be two levels of underground parking for 188 cars. This facility would connect, via a covered bridge reminiscent of the historic canneries, to the other side of the Row where another 162,000 square feet of remodeled cannery buildings would provide additional guest rooms, retail, restaurants, bars and offices.
