Master Suite-ness

Arvada, Colorado

Since when are the parents relegated to the basement?!

In this case they’re the ones with the “suite” deal! This couple with a young family smartly took advantage of the 800 square feet of available unfinished space with a hot tub immediately outside of their walk-out basement to create a large, luxury hideaway with all of the amenities. Not only did they end up with a spacious bedroom, fully appointed bathroom, and roomy walk-in closet, but complimented all of that with their own living room and workout room!

A special feature of the design includes a long row of 36″ high cabinets with a granite countertop which separates the bedroom and living room. This element not only provides storage, but creates an identity for each room while still allowing each of the two spaces to feel open and part of a much larger space. It also serves two other purposes. It provides an excellent place to place their 85″ TV which can be rotated to be viewed from the bedroom or the living room (and bathroom!); and, it becomes a coffee counter and bar at one end, including four beer taps! Our kind of client!

The client also was excited about having a bookcase in the living room which doubled as a “secret door” to their walk-in closet (they must watch a lot of old horror movies). McDA made it so by designing what appears to be a floor-to-ceiling bookcase detailed with commercial grade casters hidden by the base material.
